SRMU members stage demonstration

Stressing it forcefully : Southern Railway Mazdoor Union members staging a demonstration in front of the Coimbatore Railway Junction on Tuesday Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Coimbatore: Members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU), Salem Division, staged a demonstration in front of the Coimbatore Railway Junction seeking adequate allocation of manpower in all departments and ranks for the newly formed Salem Railway Division bifurcating the Palakkad Division.
The demonstrators pointed out that contrary to the demand of the unions, the book of sanction released by the Palakkad Division indicated that 1,520 higher grade posts pertaining to mechanical, traffic, commercial, signal and telecommunication, medical, electrical and minister wings were kept with the Palakkad Division and only 1,038 posts that too in lower grades were given to the Salem Division.
Such a measure was termed as “extremely unfair” as the Salem Division jurisdiction was not only larger but the activities in various depots/stations were much more than the Palakkad division area.
Salem Division was dealing with 80 trains per day whereas it was only 45 with the Palakkad division. Distribution of posts without considering all these vital parameters would totally cripple the functioning of the newly formed Salem Division and would also lead to stagnation for employees in all categories, they said.
The union also requested for transfer of posts on mutual basis to avoid unwarranted problems in future.
